Wildlife Wander – Thursday 15th February 2018 – RSPB Marshside, Southport.
Hi everyone for this this winter WLW I have selected a new venue for our group. It is essentially a Birdwatching visit. There is not a lot of walking, two largish Hides and the salt marsh to visit. It is likely to be very cold and as we will be sitting in hides mostly, I suggest that everyone is layered up to keep warm, bring Boots, Hats, thick gloves and packed lunch & hot drink. Also bring the usual things for a Birdwatching trip i.e. Binoculars, Telescopes and Bird Guidebooks if you can. We probably will head back about 3.30pm to try and avoid peak traffic. We can stop for a drink at a Pub on the way back – perhaps nearer to home – there is the ‘Preston Brook’ en route, at M56 junction 11 – but also I am obviously open to any better suggestions.
We aim to get to Marshside before High Tide 11.00am, this will be the optimum time for ingress of Waders from the tideline. There is likely also to be a good selection of water fowl and duck species and also hares have been seen at this location. The journey will take about 1¼ hours thus a good plan is to be leaving at 9.00am for ETA 10.15am. If anyone is interested in attending, please contact me preferably by phone so that we can chat about car sharing etc. For practicalities I am looking at a number for the party not exceeding 12 – otherwise it may be difficult squeezing into the hides as we naturally have to consider the number of other visitors at this location. Thus the party will be selected on a first come first served basis.
The RSPB Marshside Reserve is – Postcode PR9 9PJ and Grid Ref 353205 on Explorer OS Map 285. I will provide a more detailed travel route when we have established the final party travelling.
