This is a 12 km (8 mile), B walk, starting from the Dove Stone reservoir car park just outside Greenfield, near Oldham. It’s a high level circuit of cloughs, reservoirs, moors, crags and cliffs, where the South Pennines plateau descends into the Tame Valley. Typical gritstone moorland scenery, interesting weathered rock formations, with magnificent views.
Terrain is high level paths, combined with a section of reservoir road and track. The paths are muddy and faint in places and we skirt along the top of craggy drops. The ascent is about 3 km along a quiet reservoir road, initially steep. Once we’ve reached the top of the road, the going along paths is level for about 6 km, until we descend down a steep grassy path, finishing with a gentle 2 km walk alongside Dove Stone reservoir.
